Leyton House CG901B

Leyton House CG901B driven by Ivan Capelli 1990

The CG901B first made its appearance in the 7th round of the 1990 world championship in the French grand prix. This car used a Judd 8 cylinder, 76 degree, V angled 3.5 litre engine type named as the EV 76. It was used exclusively by the Leyton House team.

Leyton House was the name of the Japanese backer who sponsored the team, previous to this the team had been named March. The name March came from the initials of the founder members, a group of enthusiasts, one of which was Max Mosely, the president of the FIA, who got together in 1969 to found the team.

It was Alain Prost who took the laurels at the French grand prix that year, but the newly introduced Leyton House nearly caused a shock. Ivan Capelli led the race for 45 laps. With the team had not managing to score a single point so far that year, it seemed as if the ultra smooth surface of the Paul Ricard circuit suited the CG901B perfectly. Mauricio Gugelmin ran a close second behind his team-mate Capelli, until his engine failed.

I bought a spray can of the correct colour paint, produced by Tamiya, for this model. I decided trying to mix various colours and match the paint to photographs was a little ambitious at the time. If memory serves me correctly, the colour is called coral blue.
